The Rocky Hock Playhouse will be performing the Broadway style Christian musical Under His Wings at the 1000 seat College of The Albemarle Performing Arts Center in Elizabeth City, NC on June 29, 2013. The Rocky Hock Playhouse first opened its doors in Edenton, NC in 2000. The theatre relocated to Washington for three years beginning in 2009 but high overhead and a sharp increase in rent forced them to close the doors of the theatre in Washington and move back to Edenton in 2012. The new playhouse is located on Hwy. 32 just north of Edenton and now thrives as a dinner theatre.
Jeff and Gloria Emmerich, owners of the Playhouse and the Emmerich Theatre Production Company, have leased the Performing Arts Center in Elizabeth City in anticipation of large crowds who will wish to see this popular musical based on the book of Ruth.
A cast of some 40 actors will take the stage in this musical extravaganza for three performances only on June 29. Show times are at 10:30am, 2pm, and 6pm. Jeff and Gloria Emmerich will again play the roles they originated as Boaz and Naomi in the West Coast premiere of the show in 1993. Mariah Schierer will be playing the role of Ruth.
The love story of Ruth and Boaz is one of the most beautiful in the Bible. Ruth, a Moabite, was devastated when her husband died. Her mother-in-law Naomi, whose own husband died 10 years earlier, was also distraught. Naomi, who was living in Moab, decided her only hope for survival was to return to her homeland in Israel. Ruth insisted on returning with her though she knew it was likely she would be an outcast. One day, while gleaning wheat in the fields, Ruth caught the eye of Boaz, a wealthy farmer and landowner. Through a series of remarkable circumstances Ruth and Boaz fell in love and married. Their son's name was Obed and his lineage can be traced to King David and to Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus.
Naomi and the "redeemer kinsmen" (named Reuben in the story) are key figures in the musical. God used each of these characters to help bring about the remarkable conclusion to this wonderful story of hope and grace. Children and adults alike will thoroughly enjoy this production which is full of colorful costumes and sets, traditional Jewish folk dance, and some of the best music ever written for musical theatre. The theme song, "Under His Wings" has become a classic in Christian music.
The Rocky Hock Playhouse is one of only two full time professional Christian theatres on the East Coast. They have entertained over 250,000 people since opening their doors in 2000.
