Raising Sand... We can all thank the great musician/producer known as T Bone Burnett for bringing together this amazing collaboration of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss.
It is a special treat to have such wonderful talent brought together to form a sound that at times offers harmonious perfection and other times has a beautiful contrast that is absolutely fitting.
Quite frankly, this is a very special album.
Robert Plant which of course is best known as the popular front man of Led Zeppelin provides a unique tone unlike anything Alison Krauss has ever done before.
On the other hand she provides the amazing voice and bluegrass fiddle she is best known for with her band Union Station, but comes across a bit edgier as a result of this outstanding duo.
I think it is obvious why this album won five Grammy awards, including best album of the year.
The harmony in
Stick With Me Baby and
Please Read the Letter is astonishing.
Then you have a song like
Nothin' where Krauss' addition of her bluegrass fiddle work gives the song a life of it's own.
I find it very interesting that this album is not necessarily something you would consider an exact blend of what the two have done in their pasts.
Instead it utilizes sparks from each others successful pasts and it comes across as just a real good folk/bluegrass album. When I first heard about this duo working together with T Bone Burnett I have to admit I wasn't sure I would like the outcome.
Don't get me wrong I love the bodies of work that both Plant and Krauss have done in the past with Led Zeppelin and Union Station respectively, however I wasn't sure if thy were able to pull off something that was as good as this album is.
Cheers to T Bone for getting these two together in a studio and stage.
