Miracle at St. Anna
I eagerly awaited this movie for a variety of reasons. Of late, I have enjoyed two of Spike Lee's later films; "Inside Man" and "25th Hour." For my personal tastes, there is no greater dramatic conflict than men in battle. So, we combine a war movie with a decent director, and hopefully a fine film will be born. Sadly, "Miracle at St. Anna" (dramatic title) is a major disappointment. The acting, with Derek Luke, Michael Ealy and Laz Alonso in the lead roles, is competent, but with war movies that have dramatic titles, they have to forge a point, and I just don't understand where they're trying to take this tale. There's miracle here somewhere. I just don't get it. The miracle could be, that they allowed Spike Lee to make this big budget film, that spent far too much of its 160 minutes of runtime searching for an identity.
Rated R. Released on DVD February 10, 2009.
